Catherine Howard, Lady Berkeley, Baroness Berkeley

I, Lady Catherine Howard, am the daughter of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and Frances DeVere, Countess of Surrey. As a child, I made the acquaintance of many of the cream of English Nobility and many members of the Royal family thanks to the attendance of my grandfather, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk at court. The Howard family has always been “in the thick” of English politics, sometimes with unfortunate trips to the Tower. Thetford Abbey has been the family home since my birth in 1539 , a home that I shared with my brothers, Thomas and Henry, and sisters, Jane and Margaret.

I married my husband, Lord Henry, 7th Baron Berkeley when I was 15 years of age. It was a wonderful match proposed by my dear cousin, Her Grace, Elizabeth Regina. She knew that our common love for the hunt and especially for hawking would be a foundation upon which our marriage could flourish. God has blessed us with three children, Maria, Frances and Jane. They remain at one of our estates, Yate Court, when we are on progress. We are fortunate to also have holdings at Mangotsfield and Caludon Castle in Coventry.

We have spent many summers on progress with Her Grace, often delighting in the opportunity to hunt or hawk with Her Grace. I especially look forward to visiting with my brother Sir Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk this summer when we travel to Kingston-on-Hull on progress.
