Margaret Clifford,
Lady Stanley,
the 4th Countess of Derby
as portrayed by Patti Amor
I am Margaret Clifford, Lady Stanley, the 4th Countess of Derby. The only surviving daughter of Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Lady Eleanor Brandon. I was born in 1540. My paternal grandparents were Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk and Mary Tudor, the 5th and youngest daughter of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. She was the favourite of her brother Henry VIII. Mary was Queen Consort of France prior to marrying my grandfather
I married Henry Stanley, 4th Earl of Derby, Lord of the Isle of Mann on 7 February 1554. Our wedding was a grand affair, celebrated in the presence of Queen Mary & Felipe of Spain in the Royal Chapel at Whitehall. My Royal cousin, Mary gave me the confiscated Dudley jewels and robes as a wedding gift. I still wear the jewels proudly. I have brought five children into this world, although only two have survived, Ferdinando and William.
According to the will of my Great-Uncle, Henry VIII, I am the Heiress Presumptive to the throne. As such, my most gracious, 1st cousin, once removed, Queen Elizabeth enjoys keeping me close, to keep her eye upon me. I have spent much time in a lovely apartment in the Tower. Being the Heiress Presumptive, Lady of the Isle of Mann and of the old faith does have its drawbacks. Oh well, I mind it not, as I have only the greatest respect for Her Grace. I would do nothing to displease her Royal Self, if I can help it.
I have been granted the freedom to join the Court on progess this spring with my husband, Henry. We have spent not much time together and I am looking forward to the festivities surrounding Her Grace. I wish to dance and shop and to see the good people of England.
In all things, God Save the Queen
