Elizabeth Cornwallis, Lady Kytson

as portrayed by Kristyn Sivart

I am Elizabeth Cornwallis, Lady Kytson. I was born in the year 1547 at Brome Hall, Sussex. I am the third child and first daughter of Sir Thomas Cornwallis of Brome Hall and Anne Jerningham. I have two older brothers (William Cornwallis of Brome Hall and Charles Cornwallis) and 3 younger sisters (Ann, Alice and Mary).

My father, ever most devout to the true Catholic faith was a member of Queen Mary's privy council and my mother served as a lady of the privy chamber. My father was one of those responsible for bringing Princess Elizabeth from Ashridge to London. At the subsequent Council meeting at which it was proposed to send the princess out of England, my father was among those Catholics who sided with the Protestants in opposition.

Upon Her Grace's ascension to the Throne, my father was dismissed from office and currently enjoys his retirement at Brome Hall.

I married Sir Thomas Kytson of Hengrave Hall in the year 1561. I am his second wife. My father knows of my love for music and granted me a most wonderous gift when Thomas and I married. He allowed me to bring from Brome Hall John Wilbye, who is a madrigalist, singer and composer.

My husband and I are good and true followers of the Catholic faith, yet ever loyal subjects of Her Grace, Elizabeth Gloriana. I have two daughters: Margaret, who is 12, and Mary, who is 3 years her sister’s junior.

By nature, I am not one for the rush and whirl of court, preferring a quiet life in Sussex, yet my husband had business at Court and thus begged my accompaniment. It seemed to be an opportune time to introduce Margaret at Court for she is coming of an age. Thus, we have gone on Progress with the Queen and are enjoying the bounty and beauty of England’s countryside in Her Grace’s service.
