I am Somerset, Sir William Somerset,
Knight of the Garter, and a member of Her Majesties Privy Council.
In spite of being a
Roman Catholic, I am a favorite of the Queen. Her Majesty has said
of me, "I
have taken a stiff papist and made of him a good subject."
I had been wed to Christian,
Daughter of Edward ,First Baron North, but widowed in the year
of our lord 1555. I have since devoted all of my time to the Queen
and to matters of State.
I enjoy not the social
life, and think this union of children, Anne Cecil and Edward DeVere,
the Earl of Oxford, a waste of the Queens time and efforts. If
it was not for Burghley, a dear friend, I would be in London seeing
to matters at hand. Howe'er since the Queen is here, I feel
the need to advise and support her.
The
only prudent events which come of this is the tilting event. I was a excellent contender
in the art of tilting in my younger years, but it seems too many
days have come and gone for me to partake at this sport again. But
I shall not be bored, for there will undoubtedly be much gaming
at hand. So I will venture to say that I will bring a heavy purse.
As to the rest of this matter
that consumes the Queen's attentions, I will stay unto myself and
watch from the distance, for I am a stately old man and am devoted
to tend to Her Majesties wishes, yet hope to prevent her from marrying
in haste.
God Save the Queen!
