Some Major Events
1485 Henry VII founded the Yeomen of the Guard 1487 Battle of the Field of Stoke 1492 Siege and Capture of Boulogne 1497 Siege of Blackheath 1509 Henry VIII appoints 12 Yeomen to be Yeomen of the Tower, or Yeoman Warders 1513-1519 Capture and Garrisoning of Tournai. This is the First Battle Honor awarded to the Yeomen of the Guard and it may been seen on the Battle Standard (TOURNAI 1514) 1520 Field of the Cloth of Gold 1544-1546 War in France. This is the Second Battle Honor awarded to the Yeomen of the Guard and it may also be seen on the Battle Standard (BOULOGNE 1544) 1570 The reigning monarch's initials are added to the uniform. 1603 Dieu et mon Droit added to the uniform. 1605 The Gunpowder Plot 1642-1649 The English Civil War 1649-1660 The Commonwealth - Charles II takes the Yeomen into exile with him. 1660 The Restoration 1690 The Battle of the Boyne 1707 The Thistle of Scotland added to the uniform. 1743 The Battle of Dettingen - End of the continuous escort of the Monarch. 1801 The Shamrock of Ireland added to the uniform. 1809 Fire at St. James Palace destroys the Records and the Standard (flag). 1813 The Yeomen of the Guard cease living at court. 1830 The Guard begins to be made up exclusively of retired military men with distinguished service. 1938 King George VI presents the Yeomen with a new Standard (flag). 1985 500th anniversary of the founding of the Yeomen of the Guard.
