The Yeomen of the Queens Guarde
Valecti Garde (Corporis) Domini Regina
Playing the PartEvery character is different, but there are certain personality traits that seem common among the Yeomen. These are not rules, so feel free to develop your character along different lines if you wish.
- The most common trait among the Yeomen is their fierce, unswerving loyalty to the Queen. Persons without this trait dont seem to last long as a Yeoman. Several Yeomen have been decorated for this loyalty and devotion to duty. Many have become peers.
- A very important fact to remember is that there is only one Yeomen of the Guard, with the possible exception of the Leftenant, who is a nobleman. He is the Captain of the Guard. You should plan your character in such a way that you are a member of the "yeomen" class and a veteran of battle, probably in Ireland or the Low Countries. You will be hard pressed to come up with a valid reason to be a nobleman AND a Yeoman of the Guard.
- When on duty, the Yeomen of the Guard should be the very models of decorum. Along with the members of the nobility, the Yeomen are the "garnish" that adds the "flavor" of court life. In other words, the Yeomen help make the queen....

"
(so if she gives an order, obey it!). The Yeomen are quite literally living ornaments. To look good while standing watch over the Queen or while on parade is paramount. Therefore, the Yeomen tend to be very conscious of their clothing and their general appearance. This fastidiousness also extends to the Yeomens weapons. It would not do to appear before the Queen with a rusty weapon, and she has been known to take a guard to task for holding his pole-arm incorrectly.
- Yeomen of the Guard tend to be loud and boisterous when off duty, as any other soldier might. Drinking, singing, and "woo-ing" are common pursuits along with playing at dice or other forms of gambling. Because they are sometimes selected for their good looks, a Yeoman might have the attitude that "Im handsome, and I know it." By the same token, being a member of an elite military unit might lead to putting on airs of superiority. As one might guess, there arent very many introverted Yeomen. At the same time, the Yeomen know that their behavior reflects directly on the Queen, so they might feel slightly more restraint than their brethren in the regular armies.
Ensign Hawkesmore and Sergeant Andrews Enjoying the Day - 1998If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the officers at any time. Also, please feel free to give any member of the Yeomen of the Guard constructive criticism at any time, including the officers! This criticism could be about our acting, our dialect skills, our marching, our weapons drill, or anything else associated with the activities of the Yeomen. At the same time, please be willing to help out or stand in at any time. "We care for our own!"
