Organization
The total complement of men for the Yeomen of the Guard is between 50 and 600, depending on the time period. They may have been organized as follows during the Elizabethan period.
Officers The Captain Usually a Peer. The Captain also held the position of "Vice Chamberlain." The Captain of the Guard was solely responsible for the safety of the monarch until the Metropolitan Police took over that duty. The Standard Bearer or The Ensign The officer who carries the flag, or "Standard" The Clerk of the Cheque The Adjutant Sergeant Major Similar to the modern rank of Warrant Officer. The Yeomen Ushers guarded the entrance to the "Great Presence Chamber." Messenger Sergeant Major or Yeoman Harbinger Similar to the modern rank of Warrant Officers. These men were Royal Messengers. Enlisted Men Yeomen The remainder of the Guards. Specific Posts Yeomen Bed-Goers Men who searched and made the Royal bed. Though this is no longer done, it is still a special honorary rank among the Guards today. Yeomen Bed-Hangers Men who looked after the sheets and bed curtains. Though this is no longer done, it is still a special honorary rank among the Guards today. Yeomen of the Wardrobe The Yeomen responsible for caring for the Queen's clothing.
